And fun? and chaotic? and wild? and wonderful? and full? WHEW! Good Times.

If you missed our first indoor meeting, it was a treat. Cubmaster, Kevin, kept the kids moving and shaking. We also got to see a whole new batch of Scouts receive their Bobcat Badges! Now it’s off to earn those ranks, Scouts. Go gettem’.

Upcoming events:

  • Uncle Shucks Corn Maze
Uncle Shuck has a special deal for Scouts on September 26 and 27. The special admission rate of $11 includes the maze, hayride, demonstrations, a patch and for an additional $3, the haunted maze. We are not going as a pack. However, you’re welcome to attend as a bonus for being a Scout. Maybe you could get your den to go!
More information at this website: http://www.uncleshucks.com/uncle_shucks_scout_weekends.php
  • USS Yorktown: October 3-4
Sign up for this has come and gone. (Although if you email Bill Tighe (wtighe@bellsouth.net), he can give you a heads up on the current status if you didn’t get a chance at the last pack meeting.) It would be wise to travel over there on Friday night and get a hotel near or on Patriot’s Point so you’re ready to go at 8:30 am Saturday morning. I’m sure we’ll have a final email on information closer to October.
  • Scout Day with the Atlanta Braves
If you can’t go on the Yorktown with us, maybe you can watch the Braves beat (hopefully) the Washington Nationals and secure the wildcard spot. Tickets are $12.00 for upper level box seating. You have to purchase the tickets at the Scout Center: 1800 Circle 75 Parkway S.E., Atlanta, Ga 30339. Wear your uniform and lineup 1 1/2 hours before game time for the Scout Parade around Turner Field. (meet at the Hank Aaron Ramp, Isle 125). Space is limited to 2 leaders in uniform per unit.
  • Pack Meeting: October 9
Our next pack meeting will be on October 9. Same time. Same place. Same caotic fun!
It will also be the last night you can sign up for …
  • … District Fall Family Camping: October 16-18
In the next couple of days, we’ll upload some documentation for you about camping in the Fall. Look for it under the pack FILES on the website. Come ready to step into the past and see what Scouting may have been like at the turn of the last century.
  • Space Exploration Cub World Event: Oct 10
This council-run event will be held at Bert Adams. It’s $10/youth, $2/adult from 10 am to 3 pm.
Again, we’re not planning to go as a Pack, but this is another perk of being a Scout.
    More info and registration here.
    Flyer here.

And don’t forget SELL POPCORN until your blood runs butter … or chocolate … or cheese … or caramel …

121_LAPA_LogoOur first Service Project of the year is cleaning up the Lake. Every year, Scouts from around the area don their old tennis shoes and gloves and get down and dirty on Lake Allatoona. In 2008, the cleanup drew over 3800 volunteers from all over Metropolitan Atlanta. Over 24 tons of trash was collected from over 250 miles of shoreline.

Pack 1776 has been designated the area near the Holiday Marina not too far from exit 278 on I-75. Please arrive in your Class B T-Shirt (and rain gear if necessary) at 8:45 am. Below is specifics from the GLAC-Cleanup Committee. If you have any questions, email Michael Menninger at mikemenn13@gmail.com.

Your assigned area for cleanup will be the Holiday Marina (5989 Groovers Landing Acworth, GA 30102, Map). Clean up will begin at 9:00 am and last until 12 noon.  Following the cleanup, there will be a picnic at the Riverside day use area. Upon arrival please have the following things with you: Work Gloves, Water and Snacks. We will give you your bags, patches and a map for you to follow while cleaning.

Please adhere these safety instructions:

  • Avoid areas of shoreline that are too steep for safe walking
  • Avoid large objects that are too heavy to lift, drag, or roll
  • Double bag heavy trash and/or glass
  • Stay together as a group or utilize the buddy system
  • Small children & non-swimmers should wear a personal flotation device
  • Use caution when picking up glass. Try raking it using a stick onto something to place in the garbage bag
  • Avoid encounters with snakes and other animals
  • Should you come across the following items: please note the location so that these items can be collected at a later date-do not attempt to collect these items!
    • Potentially toxic chemicals (i.e. batteries) or debris (i.e. animal carcasses)
    • Drug Paraphernalia or other “bad” items (i.e. condoms)

    • If you are Northbound, turn LEFT onto Red Top Mountain Road

FAQ for New Scout Families for August, 2009. (Word Document)

Important Dates for August:

School Night for Scouting
Thursday, August 20 at
6:30 pm
Shallowford Falls Elementary School
This is the Pack’s main recruiting drive. Everyone interested in joining our Pack and learning about Scouting is welcome to attend (your son does not have to attend Shallowford.) Bring your son as we’ll have activities for him while the adults chat. We’ll have all of the appropriate forms for you to fill out.  (If you can’t attend this event, we’ll also have a table at the School’s Meet and Greet on August 7. Stop by if you have any questions.)

Splash Back to Scouting: Pack 1776’s first Pack Meetingpool
Sunday, August 23, 3:00 to 7:00
pm
Chimney Lakes Subdivision’s Swimming Pool: Map
This is our first meeting of the year as a Pack … and it’s a wet one! Bring your swimsuit, sunscreen, and towel to our Splash Back party. We’ll let the kids swim, do some fun activities, talk about our Popcorn fundraiser and check out what everyone’s been doing all summer. We’ll have pizza and drinks for dinner, too. If  you can’t attend the School Night for Scouting, please come to the pool party where our leaders will be happy to answer any and all questions. Remember, you can sign up for scouting anytime.

question-mark-1New Parent Orientation
Thursday, August 27 from
6:30 to 8:00 pm
La Salatte Hall at the Catholic Church of St. Ann’s
When you first start Scouting we know you’re going to have a lot of questions. (Check out the FAQ link above.) We want to get you started on the right foot by providing this orientation to give you an overview of Scouting, our Pack, and to answer all of your questions. (This meeting is primarily for the parents. But if you need to bring your son, we’re providing some entertainment for them nearby so they won’t be a distraction.) We’d also like you to consider volunteering to help with the Pack. We know there is a way for you to fit in, even if this is your first year. Give it some thought and see one of the leaders after the meeting.

If you have any questions about our Pack or these upcoming events, please email Michael Menninger: mikemenn13@gmail.com
