New Touring Requirements:

  • On January 1, 2009, the BSA published a new Tour Permit application. Anytime a Den or a Pack leaves the home base, they must submit a tour permit. The online pdf form can be filled out in your browser or filled out after it is printed.
  • A quicker and more convenient form is to fill it out online. You can do so through the My Scouting page. This is the same portal for the online classes. You must have registered with your BSA Member ID. The Tour Permit link will be on the left side.
  • Also as of January 1, it is required that ALL units must have at least one person who has taken the online course “Planning and Preparing for Hazardous Weather” on site, with their unit, anytime the unit leaves their home base. Again, this course can be taken on-line thru the My Scouting page.

Den leaders, just keep repeating, “I am not alone in this.“  The entire BSA program from National to our Pack exists to support you and your Cub Scouts. This is a resource to help you.

TRAINING

Getting Started:
Every Scout deserves a trained leader. To be a Trained Leader you must complete the following courses:

  1. Basic Leader Training This consists of two parts:
    a. New Leader Essentials (NLE): This course highlights the values, aims, history, funding and methods of the Scouting program. Once completed, it does not have to be taken again.
    b. Cub Scout Leader Position Specific Training (CSLPST): This course gives a leader the knowledge and skills needed for specific positions: Tiger Cub Leader, Den Leader, Webelos Den Leader, Cubmaster and Committee members.
  2. Youth Protection Training (YPT):
This is a specific hour long course that is taught using a video produced by national BSA. The basics can be found in the Youth Protection Chapter and should be reviewed periodically. Weblos Den leaders need an additional camping weekend training session run by the district.

These courses are offered throughout the year by the both the district and council. Most are walk-in and cost about $5. Often, all three are presented in one day. Check the calendars and attend one as soon as you become a leader.

Further Training

  • Online Training: The BSA has an extensive training program on the web called the BSA Online Learning Center. You’ll have to create a free account. But once done, it will keep and track your progress. Even parents can log-in and take the Youth Protection Training.
  • POW WOW is a district run, day long training event. Typically there are more than 50 sessions that you can choose from. Attend the ones that concern you.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

Have a year-long plan: Plan out how to get your Cubs advanced to their rank by mid-year. This leaves the remainder to earn extra achievements or catch up

Have a meeting plan: Over plan each meeting in case something goes quickly or not at all, then you have something to fall back on.

Ask for help: from your parents, from other Den Leaders (especially those of the next higher rank who had your position last year). from the Cub Master, from the Pack Committee or from the District Commissioner.

The page includes a Leaders Toolkit where you’ll find instructions on how to install PackMaster. Note access requires a password. Click HERE to access the kit.
